Genre Research- Similar Artists

Give Me Love- Ed Sheeran

  • Good use of colours
  • Everything looks as if it has a blue/green filter on it
  • Girl moves more when the music gets faster
  • Uses the beat to change image, although not all the time
  • Good use of costume and props
  • Modern
  • Not too over the top and imaginative, but still uses an original idea
  • Fits the genre of the song
  • Overall video is very cute
Big Jet Plane- Angus and Julia Stone

  • Contrast between adventurous lyrics and the boring environment the girl is in
  • Lack of expression on employees face
  • Pink colour adds to the Mise en Scene
  • Use of singers lip-syncing on the TV in the video
  • Use of slow motion

You- Keaton Henson


  • High quality camera
  • Use of slow motion effects
  • Attention to detail of both body and objects
  • Variety of people used
  • Simple concept
  • Use of special effects
  • Use of black background contrasted with white sheets/clothes worn by people
  • Artist is in black clothes, which isolates him and identifies as the main
  • Small movements allow you to focus on music rather than only the video


Slightly Different Genre- More techno, but still soft pace

Genesis- Grimes
  • Very surreal and weird to suit genre of the music
  • Good use of colours
  • Good use of lighting
  • Strange characters involved
  • Good use of environment 
  • Variety of characters
  • Good costumes
  • Speeds up as song speeds up
  • Simple concept of people dancing infront of the camera, just with quirky characters and costumes
  • Upbeat/happy song contrasts with use of violent weapons as props
  • Good use of props
  • Cross fades between environments are highly effective
All of the videos I looked at were of a similar genre to the song that I am using. Not only are they a similar genre, but the artists are also very similar to mine, apart from the last video, but I still included this as an extra consideration for if I want to challenge the conventions of my music video.
